Author: Victim
Subject: At The Dock

Victim pads through the sand and arrives at the wooden platform affectionately called “The Dock.” This small floating wooden base is too small to harbor anything larger than a sailing boat, but it is able to handle four or five boats at one time. Most of the boats are built by random people in the caves, most of whom never expect to be on the water for more than an hour. This shoddy concern shows on the boats themselves; many have obvious holes just above the water’s surface, and are rarely used. Some boats were carved by men who intended to use them, and wanted them to last. These boats were kept in good shape. One boat in particular stands out. It has a certain handmade quality, but several coats of paint and good cleaning have kept it in nice repair. It has no holes, or worn wood spots, and it’s clear of any clinging plants or fish. It’s the largest boat in the dock. It’s been painted a deep blue from bow to stern, with wavy lines of black and dark grey mingling along the wooden surface. Try though people might, it seems to be untitled. The boat is deceptively small, with very little open area, but it seems to ride deeply in the water, indicating a sub-level deck. This is not a fishing boat. This is not a boat for pleasure cruises. “This,” says Victim with great pride, “is the ‘New Moon’. I’ve built her and tended her, and she’ll take me from the end of the world and back, if I ask her to.”
