Lian nodded acknowledgement, grinning. "Strange it was. But exhilarating too." She paused, pondering Jyssa's question. "Why did a Candidate. . . Why does anyone do anything in their life? I felt a compulsion, I suppose, as if farmering were not the only thing I ever wanted for myself. Like perhaps I deserved something more. My life seemed like it was going in a different direction, and I had to follow this instinct, wherever it led me. Does that sound at all silly to you?" she asked, finally realizing that she'd been talking a long time, and that her words fell oddly on her ears, though whether from recognition of truth or lies she could not tell.
