I only recently discovered your site and thought some of your members might be interested in a dedication ceremony on the Erath Co. courthouse square here in Stephenville on Oct 21st. We plan to honor the 600 known CSA veterans who are buried in Erath Co. A plaque honoring CSA veterans will be dedicated at the cememony, which has been approved by the Erath Co. Commissioners Court. A number of local and state elected officials have been invited to attend and participate in the ceremony. I'm sure the planning committee would be happy to discuss your group's possible participation in or attendance at the event. The person to contact is Mrs. Joyce Whitis. She is the Erath Co. CSA Monument Chairman.

Subject: Forrest's Escort

Howde

I'm a member of Company G Queensland Australia. Am having a bit of trouble with history and you may be able to steer me in a better direction.

I believed that Captain JC Jackson was in charge of Forrest's Escort. However one book only mentions him in the battle of Brice's Crossroads and another doesn't include any mention of him at all in a listing of all of Forrest's officers.

Why is Capt Jackson so forgotten when he fought with Forrest for the entire war? Can you suggest a reference that tells his story.

Any help appreciated.

Trooper Ted

I am a member of the 85eme regiment Saintonge, a living history organization, which recreates one of the French regiments sent over to assist in the American Revolution.
This October we, along with British groups and various American regiments, will be recreating the Siege and Surrender at Yorktown.
I am looking for African Americans who would be willing to represent the regiment of freedmen from St. Dominique, who volunteered to fight alongside the French army for American Independence.
Please contact me if interested.
Sincerely,
Matthew Mees

Subject: Blacks in the 10th Texas Infantry (Granbury's Brigade)?

Were there any black serving in Cleburne's Division, particularly in Granbury's Brigade (earlier called Nelson's, Deshler's, & Smith's Brigade). I have been writing a book (fiction) based on my Gr-Grandfather who was a private in Company H of the 10th Texas (originally under Col. Allison Nelson). They went on to become part of Cleburne's Division and fought gallantly in many engagements. My Gr-Grandfather was captured during the retreat from Missionary Ridge (Tunnel Hill) and sent to Rock Island Prison, where he enlisted in the Second U. S. Volunteer Infantry in October 1864 (one of six regiments recruited from various northern prisons), eventually serving on the Santa Fe Trail from Feb 1865 till he mustered out in Nov. 1865. The regiments that later took the place of these former Rebel POW's were the Buffalo Soldiers.

It is fascinating to me the evolution and connections between all people who struggled in the Civil War and afterwards. Thank you for this site.

Has there been a reply to Ms Hammond? I'd be interested in the origins of Terrell's flag as well.

The best place for regimental flags that I have found is Ancient American Art. The link is http://www.pointsouth.com/aaa.htm

My GGG was Capt. J. Agustus Howze, Co. D,14th Texas Cav. Hood's Division, out of Henderson,Rusk Co., Texas.
I am having lots of difficulty finding info about this regiment. I know someone in the 37th can help or advise.
I also have a colored-in photo of him in uniform that is so colored over as to be totally usless for any attempt to properly identify any aspects of the uniform.
I want to have made a copy of the uniform, and have a taylor friend who is willing. We have identified the coat type and have ordered a pattern. It is a double breasted frock, but I am not sure what wool would most likely be correct. Capt. Gus served from Nov.'61 until June '65, but I think the uniform I am trying to duplicate dates from Mid to late '62 or early '63. Any suggestions willbe greatly appreciated.

In 1850's my great uncle Frank Richeson/Richardson moved from Monroe County, Tennessee to Texas. He was in his mid-20's. His daddy and mama were William and Martha Kerr Richeson (spelled Richardson on 1860 Tennessee census). Uncle Frank attended a UCV Reunion in 1906 at Chattanooga. He seems to have alterred his name spelling in Texas. Any info will be appreciated.

I was wondering if I could get some information on joining your unit. I have had five or so years off and on of reenacting experience...everything from artillery to Navy. I am currently looking for a home unit. Right now I am working on my Masters in History and my thesis subject is on black Confederate soldiers. I live in Houston, Texas. Any membership info would be greatly appreciated.

My ancestor J. J. McBride was captain of Company C, 5th Texas Regiment, Texas Brigade, ANV. His body servant Levi Miller served through the war with him, is recorded as having fought with his company at Spotsylvania, and received a Confederate pension from Virginia. I have a picture of him among other Confederate veterans at a reunion. JJ and Levi were at Gettysburg. JJ died in 1879 but Levi lived until 1921.

Question: one of the references on this site is to black Confederate veterans at a gettysburg reunion not having accomodations until their fellow (white) southerners helped them. It occurs to me that Levi Miller could very well have attended a gettysburg reunion. But there is no source listed for this story on your page "On Black Confederates". Can anyone provide me with the specific reference? Or indeed on Levi Miller generally? (I have a photo of his grave -- his name, dates, and "CSA" -- which someone connected with the 37th helped me obtain last year.)
