This old song is very Politically Incorrect - however, the song was very sad and was about a little black boy behind a fence looking out as the white school children went back and forth to school - "Mammy" tells him not to cry to stay on his side of the high board fence - One day the dusky little elf was gone forever more, and Mammy sitting in her door, rocked as oft before and crooned to her old black self, Now Honey, don't you cry, just stay on this side of the high board fence -
My Mom was from South Louisiana and claims she did not know where the song came from or how she learned it - Mom has died now and my Sisters and I are trying desperately to find the words to this song to feel connected to her -
Help please!
