My dad used to sing this one, too:

You started out singing something that sounded like:

Marseydotes and doeseydotes and little lambseydivy, a kiddledyivy too, wouldn't you? If the words sound queer and funny to the ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey. Sing "mares eat oats" and "does eat oats" and "little lambs eat ivy." (Repeat first part)
