This is definitely a juggling act. Teachers are so busy with so many things that simply finding a "cute" activity is just "enough" for the moment. We need to extend and expand our focus and thoughts as teachers to the long term.
I find that showing our proteges the "cute' activities to get them hooked works but don't allow them to stay at the "cute" stage but challenge them to move on.
I suggest sharing the Grant Wiggins book...Understand by Design and opening up discussions. The idea of Essential Questions can also lead away from the cute ideas to the "meat' of the matter. It's a slow process but worth the trip.
