I agree with Jim that sometimes doing something "cute" is a hook. However, use that with caution. The biggest complaint of classroom teachers is that we continue to add on new initiatives without expanding the time in the classroom. I believe it is important to keep asking the question, "What is it that you want students to be able to do, know and understand?" Make sure that the technology is a means to that end. Additional activities only detract from the time available for the important learning. I too recommend Understanding By Design and also Jamie MacKenzie's work on Essential Questions in www.fno.org.
