Title: Taking the Initiative: Three Ed Tech Programs

Source: Technology & Learning Magazine, October 2001 (www.techlearning.com)

Three schools were visited and their story on how they integrate technology is discussed.
All three were totally different on how they integrated technology and what their purposes were in the school but everyone is having the commitment to find ways to integrate the technology.

Berkeley Foundation for Opportunities in Information Technology was a program which targeted groups of minority students in the fields of engineering and computer science. This program is more than just learning computer skills, it wants students to become self-confident also. There is a lot of peer mentoring and parental involvement in the program.

High Tech High combines an interdisciplinary, project-based curriculum where students learn to be critical thinkers and to solve problems and learn how to work alone as well as in teams. The school runs like a business and by 11th grade the students intern at local companies. Technology isn’t separated from learning it is part of the entire curriculum. What I liked is that it seemed as though they worked as a team. They have teachers and students learning technology together and the teachers have a faculty meeting every morning to discuss and share ideas.

Remingtom Middle School has technology classes as well as trying to integrate the technology through cross-disciplinary courses. Teachers are encouraged to make technology part of their professional development as well as integrating it into their curriculum. Students use technology as a tool for research and solving problems. This is the school most of us are familiar with.
