Ani, There is a road across the mountains from the South on the Princes Highway, Betty and I took it when we were less than 2 years in oz and she was pregnant with the twins, it was the Omeo Highway, "Highway my arse" It took as up over the mountains, dirt road and narrow track at times and room for one car width, you could not do a U turn with the steep drop on one side and the cliffs on the other, it was about about 200 klm in total to bitumen again, got lost twice with forks in the road and no signs, I think we ended up on the Bogong High plains, any way got up to Omeo then onward up the valley to Tallangatta, then to lake Hume and Albury, I think that alpine road is mostly sealed now, but you can go that way to Mount Beauty and Bright And if you lived to the east of Melbourne it is a very scenic route... But Betty was sick as a dog and I don't remember how many times I had to stop the car for her to have a vomit out the open door...
