I like Angel with Darla because she gives him a sense of depth and history. When she's with him, I can really go, "yeah, this guy is 200-odd years old". With Cordy, she gives him a connection to humanity that he sorely needed. The deep Angel/Cordy friendship that could turn into something more is fascinting. Right now, I'm more Angel/Darla than Angel/Cordy at the moment. As far as I'm concerned, both women know Angel a heck of a lot better than Buffy ever did back in Seasons 1 and 2.

You want to know something? True happiness is over-rated. All it does is turn Angel into a sadistic s.o.b., who treats women like crap. In terms of consequences for sex, a baby is on the scale of very nice compared to the sex with Buffy in Season 2. Quite frankly, I don't know what to really say about Darla/Angel. I can't quite call it love, but I can't call it "lust" either.

Somehow, "lust"/"obsession" diminishes the impact those two had on each other. I think it lies somewhere in between. Those two have one heck of a connection, though. They've both been through experiences that only they can understand. They share a past and a history that's just amazing. If anything, I love the flashbacks because they show me the evolving nature of their relationship from the inital faithlessness in The Trial, to the Bonnie and Clyde feel in Offspring, to the settled couple in Darla and Dear Boy to the sad disintegration upon ensoulment in 5x5.

So, was Angel in love with Darla? I'm not sure. I think he was attracted to her as Angel and as Angelus, since she made him who he is. Darla, on the other hand, was attracted to Angel and I think began to fall in love with him at the end of the Trial. if anything, her reaction in Epiphany reminds me of a woman who was deeply betrayed by a man she was attracted to.
