I think that's easier said than done. When you are at the point of starving, people are willing to steal and risk their lives. would you rather people steal? it's all about survival. i think wal-mart knows this, and that's why they appeal to everyone. everyone needs food, clothes, shoes. they offer it cheaper than anybody else. as a result, they screw over their suppliers and other businesses. but is it really a crime, if the savings get passed down to the consumer? that was the best point made in the article, i think.
If you are jewish and nazis offer you food, you take it. you don't want to die...it's like trying to drown yourself by holding your breath, your survival reflex kicks in.
wal-mart is very aggressive and has the power to destroy small towns and small businesses. This I understand and I don't like. However, nobody is dying here. There are "eviler" businesses such as nike and shell gasoline, if you really want to talk about unethical business practices.
I don't agree with Wal-mart or its strategies...but the only solution against Wal-mart is to fortify the community bonds. In NYC, I didn't see any Wal-marts...that's cause a) there wasn't enough space, and b) the smaller stores are already so well established and supported by locals, that there would be tough competition.
The real problem involves land zoning issues and suburban sprawl. I would argue if we tackle these problems, community bonds would strengthen, car use would go down, and stores such as Wal-mart wouldn't be able to survive...I can't explain it all here though. Jing jangs.
