Unfortunately, affluent Chinese-Filipinos are often the victims of kidnap-for-ransom gangs. This has become a lucrative business for Philippine kidnappers during the current Arroyo administration. Hence, the Philippines has earned the notorious title of "The Kidnapping Capital of Asia".

In her Jan. 9 column in the Manila Bulletin newspaper, former Tourism Secretary Gemma Cruz-Araneta listed the Philippines as No. 5 in the world in kidnapping cases. "The largest antikidnapping insurance company in Mexico, Hiscox, reports that Mexico is second to Colombia in kidnaping, but way ahead of Brazil, Russia, the Philippines and Nigeria," she wrote at http://www.mb.com.ph/news.php?art=4112§=3&fname=OE0201094112o.txt.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo should be applauded, though, for requesting the media to minimize reporting negative stories like kidnappings, robberies and killings because these scare away foreign investors and tourists and hurt the economy.
