Well said Stangman. This native might ruffle a few feathers by agreeing with you. A couple of years ago while stepping over sleeping drunks by the Bear fountain in from of the Old Mission I asked one of the naive women serving food on the FRONT PORCH of the Mission why they didn't do it in the back courtyard? She told me that Father --- wouldn't allow it!

I attended Mission school longer than I want to remember and we NEVER fed the hobos in the middle of town. Some private people might have, but we never served them in public. There were hobo jungles in the creek across from San Luis High, under a large Fig tree on Chorro and Mill, under the Marsh Street Bridge and other shady spots about town.

Recently while buying flowers on Marsh and Higuera I asked the merchant how her staff handled the recent armed robbery? (They only took $100.) She said the police watched the Marsh Street bridge area for a few days but since have disappeared.

A few years back these Depression Era "hobos" became politically correct "Homeless" and every naive idealist in town passed the hat to build a Homeless Shelter--and all the thanks they get are complaints from their freeloaders that it's too far from their prime sidewalk pan-handling spots! The hobo network has been active in railroad towns for decades. They know which towns are patsies, and they tell their friends. It's an easy road trip from the Bay Area to Santa Cruz, San Luis and Santa Barbara. And we've let them know where they can get free food and bunks.

Santa Cruz, Berkeley and San Francisco have serious homeless problems. In Santa Cruz almost all of the major stores moved south to Capitola ten years ago. Berekley is so scared of the homeless that they refuse to roust them from their self-anointed "Peoples Park" even though we Tax payers own that land that UC was supposed to build dorms on. Cal did put in some sand volleyball courts a few years ago but no one plays there. Why? The "Homeless" buried broken glass in the sand to keep the students out! While in San Francisco in January I noticed a lot of retail vacancies. The former TGIFriday's across from the Buena Vista on Hyde Street has been vacant for almost a year. Across the street from it, in the Cannery Building, another restaurant-bar was vacant with a FOR LEASE sign. The millions Willie Brown's administration squandered on paving over Union Square to discourage the homeless has turned the once proud shopping area into a cold prision-like yard.

I read where we are losing some of our longtime police and our new Chief is from Santa Barbara County. (Finally a break from LA-bred Chiefs!) Let's hope she is aware that transients are responsible for most of the crime, not "under aged" college students. Why doesn't someone in San Luis ask Rudy Giuliani how New York cleaned up their "homeless" problem? It's really amazing that New York streets are safer than my hometown's.
