Meggie, you beat me to this post : ) Anyway, yes, I know Mr. Fornale cannot stand modern musicals, but I could not let this comparison go. While watching the opera I found it interesting how many similarties there were between not only the story line, but also the characters. Here's what I've noticed so far, the first character is in La Boheme and the second is in RENT:

Rodolfo- poet ----> Roger- musician/songwriter

Marcello- painter ----> Mark- film maker

Colline- philosopher ----> Tom Collins- "professor"

Schaunard- musician ----> angel Dumont Schunard- "musician"

Mimi- in love with Rodolfo, sick with TB ----> Mimi- in love with Roger, sick with AIDS

Musetta- in love with Marcello, but tries to make him jealous ----> Maureen- ex-girlfriend of Mark, a flirt

Benoit- landlord ----> Benny- landlord

I found it very interesting how close names in RENT are to those in the original opera.
