The Barber of Seville

I have to say that so far I find The Barber of Seville to be very...interesting. While I am enjoying the actual storyline very much, partly because I am already familiar with most of the characters, I do not like the way it is presented. I find myself getting lost during most of the songs because my attention is drawn away from the subtitles to the crazy clown men running around the stage. It seems that most of the actions taking place on the stage have absolutely nothing to do with the action of the opera itself. Perhaps I would be able to better appreciate the opera if it wasn't so...strangely done. And what's with the singing donkey?!
