I've noticed, also, that much of the comedy of the opera seems to be visual than verbal or situational, as in "The Marriage of Figaro." I mean, what is with all of these umbrellas? It's cute but a distraction. "The Barber of Seville" almost seems to be set up like a modern-day musical--a spectacular song and dance number, the exit of the dancing ensamble, followed by spoken dialogue. Why such a change in the way opera was done? One can't even say this was a permanent change, because Verdi's comedy, which is composed after "The Barber of Seville" is not staged in such a fashion. Was Rossini trying a new type of opera, or was his opera focused on entertaining the common, uneducated person of the day, or what is it exactly that makes Rossini write such an, for lack of a better phrase, unconventional opera?
