Subject: Figaro

In my mind there is no comparison: The Marriage of Figaro was much better than the Barber of Seville! First of all, I found The Barber of Seville to be to much of an attempt at entertainment. The clowns, vibrant props and extravagant antics were merely a stage show and entirely distracted my attention from the story-line of the opera and worst of all, the music. Secondly, I was very confused by the fact that not only were the characters from each of the operas played by differant people, but many of them were of differant voice ranges. Due to the fact that we watched The Marriage of Figaro in class first, I was expecting the same characters. Finally, I thought that the story-line of The Marriage of Figaro was much more intriguing, due to the fact that it was much more intricate, and held a few sub-plots. There was the constant mystery of what would happen next, how Figaro would solve each predicament that he found himself in and the soft allusions to the past histories between the characters. All-in-all, I found The Marriage of Figaro to be a much more entertaining and enjoyable opera, not to mention the fact that I liked the music better!
