Subject: Frank Capra's use of children in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"

When Mr. Fornale mentioned in class that children were not pages in Congress, I began thinking that Mr. Capra had a symbolic reason for using them, especially considering that, with the exception of boy pages, the movie seems to take pains to be realistic. I then began thinking about how Mr. Smith was in relation to the rest of the Congressmen there. Mr. Smith is innocent, unblemished by the corruption of politics. Thus, I think that Mr. Capra might have used the children pages to personify that, seeing as children are an universal symbol of innocence.

On a side note, I love this movie, and can't wait to see how it progresses. ;-)
