Subject: 20th century art

Both expressionism and abstraction, the two main divisions of twentieth century art, were intended to be new ways for artists to express their ideas and feelings. Expressionism did this by allowing artists to depict a scene not as it appeared in nature, but with a distorted view as it may appear in one's imagination. Abstraction allowed artists to draw scenes with a series of geometric shapes instead of as the scene actually appeared. While these new mediums of expression gave artists a chance to express their ideas, they did not allow the average viewer to understand them. Since these new artworks came largely from the minds of artists, viewers have a very hard time deciphering what they are or what they represent since these works have never been seen in nature.
