MSc in Management Development & Training

The University of Bristol’s Masters in Management Development and Training is an
innovative two-year part-time MSc which has been run for professional developers since

What do you want to achieve through your career? Is it simply a way of paying the monthly bills or is it more than that? This seminar provides practical advice on safeguarding and building your current career, but it also tackles a deeper and more challenging question; what can stop us from crafting the career (and life) that we really want for ourselves?

Learn about the fundamental career lessons of the last decade and what the future holds in store

We are all aware that the nature of work has changed radically in recent years as organisations have embraced new technology and management ideas, coped with increasing complexity and competitiveness, and made ever greater demands on their people:

• What lessons can we learn as individuals, either on the inside of organisations attempting to prosper (or simply survive!) or stepping outside to carve our own niche?

• What does the immediate future hold for us as the economic downturn begins to bite and organisations react to an increasingly uncertain future?

Periods of transition are times of opportunity as well as challenge

Simply understanding what is happening in the world around us is not enough. During this seminar we will look at how you can actively take control of your career and build the life that you want. We will explore some of the trade-offs that you might need to make when you change track, and take a look at the paradox of pro-actively managing your career whilst being open to where life itself is leading you.

This seminar will address how you can manage your career to meet work and life objectives, for example:

• What to expect in the next 18 months and how to work with the forthcoming changes.

• The seven golden rules for career resilience – the practical steps you can take to boost your career prospects and finding the work that suits you best.

• Making a Fresh Start – summoning up the courage to make fundamental changes in your life.

• Exploring new options - alternative career structures and life choices including ‘portfolio’ careers and choices on life-work balance.

• Surviving a period of career transition - what to do and what not to do!





New working relationships – developing a genuine ‘win-win’ between organisations and individuals

We will also be looking at how companies should respond to the new economic climate and how they can best safeguard long term resources, while gaining short term flexibility by embracing new working relationships.

ADMINISTRATION

The seminar will be held at the University of Bristol at 43 Woodland Road on Saturday March 9th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The cost is £25 per head.

Tutors

The seminar is being run by John Middleton and Bob Gorzynski, who both work extensively in personal and organisational transition and career management.

John Middleton is a leading author in the field of careers and organisational change. His books include Smart Things to Know About Your Career, which will be published in November 2001 and be available at the seminar. He is the founder of the Bristol Management Research Centre and works extensively with individuals (coaching and mentoring) and organisations (consultancy) in the field of organisational change. He has an extensive background in Human Resources, including at BAA plc and Sun Life, and teaches organisational development and the future of organisations at postgraduate level at the University of Bristol.

Bob Gorzynski specialises in facilitating strategic and organisational change at senior level by working on a one-on-one basis with the CEO/Managing Director and/or with the executive team. Over the past three years Bob has developed the innovative Fresh Start Executive Programme to enable senior executives to evaluate their current career and circumstances in the light of their deeper aspirations. He has extensive consulting experience in organisational strategy within both the private and public sectors and also teaches strategy and organisational change at postgraduate level at Bristol University. He trained as a Chartered Accountant and has an MBA from York University in Toronto.
