Subject: Oceanside Picnic Report

On Saturday, October 6, the Southern California chapter of the ICU Alumni
Association held its 2001 Picnic at the beautiful and scenic Hesse Park in
Rancho Palos Verdes overlooking the Pacific Ocean. More than 20 alumni and
friends joined in for the event. Given the serious situation with world
events, the gathering was subdued, but was an enjoyable and welcomed respite
to come together in friendship.

We were particularly pleased to welcome several new members to the Club:
Shintaro "Shin" Shikata (Class of '94 in Sociology) and his wife Satoko Obi
Shikata (Class of '95 in Sociology) are new members. Shin joined Kikkoman
Corp. in Tokyo after ICU and transferred to Los Angeles in 1999. Satoko and
Shin were married two weeks after moving to Los Angeles, although Shin had
to suffer for a year until Satoko was able join him from Japan. Satoko was
in the Cycling Club at ICU, but can we venture to guess that she enjoyed the
Aikido Club more, since both Satoko and Shin were in the Aikido Club at ICU!

Other new members are Takuo "John" Ito (Class of '95 in German Art) and his
wife Yukiyo. Takuo works for Morinaga Nutritional Foods (makers of Morinu
tofu products). Next time, we asked Takuo to bring some samples of new
Morinu products for testing. We suggested things like curry tofu or tofu
frozen fruit drinks, but we're not sure he liked our ideas. Anyway, Takuo
and Yukiyo report that they enjoy their life in Southern California and who
could disagree.

We were joined late by Haseo Nakanishi (Class of '85), who has now
officially "gone Hollywood." Haseo is a professional composer who works on
musical scores for movies and live productions. After extensive experience
in Japan, he came to Los Angeles to obtain a Master's Degree from the
Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.
Recently, Haseo reports that he is working and has worked on a string of
movie project, including the just released film "Bandit" starring Bruce
Willis and other stars. He is currently working on the production of
musical scores for two more major Hollywood motion pictures. Haseo is not
seen in our group photo because he worked so late the night before, by the
time he woke up and arrived at the picnic, most of the group had already
gone home. We're honored that Haseo is such a devoted ICU Club member that
no matter how exhausted he was, he still made it to our picnic. He even
brought food (half a sandwich). Bravo!

Entertainment at the picnic was varied and eclectic and included a magic
show (courtesy of Nicholai's birthday party at the neighboring tables), a
tent, lots of balls and a dinosaur Pinata, which sort of worked and sort of
didn't. Anyway, a wonderful time was had by all and we look forward to more
fun activities and fundraising events from the Southern California Alumni
Club.
