Subject: Our Funky Compost Bin

Our Funky Compost Bin

I decided to build a compost bin, not very long ago
with my helper, nephew Jonathan, who is four years old
the things we learned along the way, were astonishing
to say the least . . . life’s lessons deeply instilled
no homework, being inside bound or desks that don’t fit
we set about looking, for boards of different sort
that’s where ‘funky’ comes in, not a carpenters dream
but when we are through, that compost bin is the pride
of our summer scene

In the alley, the backyard corner, old garage
and chicken coop, there wasn’t anyplace
we wouldn’t stoop . . . to look and search
one piece here, another there and we were on our way
while walking down the alley we found a bird that was
dead for awhile, lesson number one, death follows life
it is the way things go, that birdie lived a life so sweet
now back to the ground he would sink
this was a puzzle for little Jonathan, he thought about it
for awhile went back several times to examine, what was left
of that little bird, next it was a butterfly we discovered without
breath, and then a bee had fallen and taken his last flight
discussion ensued after each event, dust to dust when life is spent

All the while our compost bin is taking shape you see
three sided is what it is going to be, don’t need four
too much, chicken wire to line the sides will hold the
garbage in, learning all the while about the wet and dry,
layering it in and again, composing into dirt…another lesson
about this time a new discovery in the back yard, a dead robin,
mother bird, this four year old declared
we dug a grave and buried her beneath the blackened sod
and talked of people whose life is spent…their spirit goes
back to God . . .

The boards have been found, sawed the right length,
approximately and by others, we now began to nail
this funky bin is taking shape, excitement is in the air
with trial and error we got it to stand on it’s own
without falling down, chicken wire in place, we are
on the way to great composting . . . hurray, hurray!!
The lessons learned invaluable while on this little project,
helping, cycle of life, camaraderie, God’s classroom with
two of his pupils . . . the wonders of life and memories ingrained.
