I agree that we rarely stay down long.

But talking about anything pre-2000 is irrelevant, given how much the draft and salary cap now regiment the parameters of a rebuild.

From 2000 - 2002, we had pick 1 (Josh Fraser), pick 7 (Danny Roach), pick 1 in the PSD (Shane O'Bree, who was originally a pick 10), pick 3 (Alan Didak), and picked up (lower in the draft) guys like Ben Johnson, Leon Davis, Ryan Lonie, and a few others. That's added to a core of Nathan Buckley, Anthony and Saverio Rocca, Paul Williams, Scott Burns, Paul Licuria, Simon Prestigiacomo, Mal Michael, etc. Ultimately, swapping out Williams netted us James Clement and Brodie Holland.

From 2005 - 2010, we had pick 2 (Dale Thomas), pick 5 (Scott Pendlebury), Pick 8 (Ben Reid), Pick 10 (Nathan Brown), Pick 11 (Steele Sidebottom), Pick 29 (Dayne Beams), Pick 28 (Chris Dawes), along with the likes of father/sons Heath Shaw and Travis Cloke, and core players like Dane Swan, Didak, Johnson, Davis, etc. If you retrospectively graded these plays, Heater, Cloke, and Swan would all be top 10 picks.

In both rebuilds, we had a lot to play with -- especially in the draft.

This time around? We don't have that draft collateral. Moreover, when selections are inevitably allocated to Tasmania that'll compromise several key drafts.

I don't think we'll bottom out, but the concern would be we'll only have the resources to build a scrappy, competitive team.

We really need a few guys (in the group of Di Mattia, Macrae, McInnes, Allen, etc.) to become much better than we anticipated to compensate for the lack of cream available to us.

The AFL penalizes good business. I feel for teams like Hawthorn, who are trying to legitimately get back up the ladder sooner rather than later, while North Melbourne will just sit on the bottom, sacking coaches, being a mess, and netting top picks and priority picks and, by virtue of their ineptitude, will potentially build a monster side.
