They discussed that that four of the past 5 premiers were number 1 at scores from Defensive Mid intercepts, across half back. Darcy was high in this area as was Howe. Teams are not going to continue to play to our strengths, the same as we don't allow, or try not to allow the opposition to play to their strengths.
We were the champions of slingshot football off half back last year.
We are now trying to be a forward half pressure team if you believe the experts.
Everyone talks about not letting Melbourne with Lever and May to intercept. On the weekend every time the Lions came forward, based on footage shown on the First Crack, the Brisbane forwards ran back towards the goal away from the ball carrier. It meant May and Lever had to be accountable and had to stay with their man and run with them. It totally opened up the forward line. The entries were much deeper as well.
I will check later but Melbourne either did not have a back half F50m intercept mark or May did not.
The same tactics are being applied to the Pies. They are trying to take away the intercept marking of Darcy and Howe. And or taking them to wider areas or to areas to take them away from being an influence. Every week a club will be trying to find different ways to do this. Better we are learning what they are and hopefully making successful changes before September. The worry is the up and down levels of intensity week to week, quarter to quarter. You must defend to the ball or apply better pressure at the source better up the field first.
