Subject: Very difficult pre-draft - very easy post-draft - 2020 as an example
In reply to: the seer 's message, "I'd LOVE to see Dekka's pre-draft note archives. "We're not selecting the following, for these reasons."" on 11:39 06/09/24 Fri

The draft is a "decision at the point in time" proposition.

In looking at the 202 draft (and at past draft profile statements made by a number of varying sources), each of Finn Macrae, Ollie Henry, Reef McInnes and Caleb Poulter were rated by many AHEAD of the pick we actually used for ANY of them.

Both Finn and Ollie were considered "top 10" postentials by many "phantom drafts" and Reef was considered a definite first rounder (some had him as early as pick 10 or 11).

Poulter was considered a "border-line" first rounder.

Now, no one can predict that Henry would have wanted to seek an earlier exit "back home" to Geelong than he did....so do we make a ASSMUPTION that certain players are wanting to "go home" in the mix of all the other decisions that have been made, or do we simple draft them knowing what we do at the time?

Finn and Reef may STILL make it at senior level - but they have been limited in terms of senior opportunity by being out of a team that had the cattle to win a Flag in 2023...that's not a rub on them, but while we may lament that "they haven't come on", we must also acknowledge that there was a very good reason why they haven't figured much in our senior side to this point in time.

I know there are legitimate criticisms about how we've managed our draft picks and our selections....but it's not ALL bad news.

If anybody saw my previous post about draft picks, it is that about 70% of players picked in the draft play no more than 50 games....

It is an inexact science that offers some level of probability, but no level of guarantee!
