Subject: The "best" of a bad lot, I guess
In reply to: RD 's message, "Couldn't happen to a bigger bunch of arrogant self entitled carnts,, well apart from Carlton, and maybe" on 22:37 13/09/24 Fri

Given the disappointing way the season panned out for us, we are still on the receiving end of a bit of bitter medicine.

For a start, the Ginni trade in its entirety has seen us actually lose out given that we swapped Ginnivan, 2023 pick 39 , 2024 pick 30, 2024 pick 66 for 2023 pick 33, 2024 pick 33 and 2024 pick 51.

Of course, we used 2023 pick 34 and 2024 pick 10 on Schultz.

So this is the "medicine" we are needing to take, although I would suggest that the jury is still out in terms of what the longer-term outcome will be (and a lot of that depends on how good a player Schultz turns out for us)

It will also depend on what that 2023 pick 33 turns out like (we used this to select Tew Jiath).

Whether we can package up the picks we have acquired (plus whatever we happen to get for any outcasts across this trade period) to get smething of higher value in this 2024 draft remains to be seen.

We do have the luxury of flexibility in being able to cash in our 2025 first rounder (potentially) given that we have a father-son (McGuane) that looks to require points in a draft cohort that, some would argue, is not as talented nor as "deep" as the 2024 draft.

The bonus is, therefore, that we could potentially minimise the damage of what we have paid to aquire (or let go) of players in the last year or two.

The other small mercy is that Carlton (who looked to be extremely well-placed to go very deep into September at one stage), were brought back to reality courtesy of the luck teams will face with significant injuries.

The other is that, despite not getting value in return for Ginnivan, one wonders if his penchant for continuing to "attract the wrong kind of attention" is someting we don't particularly want to run rampant at the club.

Season 2024 had Ginnivan clearly ahead in delivering for the Hawks as opposed to what the return Schultz gave the Pies was. The acid will clearly be on the latter to turn this around in 2025.

Ultimately, a lot will hinge on how we can maneuver the off-season movements and acquisitions in the coming months.
