Subject: I think their success is a huge draw

And no signs of that changing in the near future.

They keep making finals despite everyone saying they're too old.

Collingwood do as well. But we almost *have to* make finals. Such is the attention we get from the media and our own fanbase. Where I don't think Geelong has that same pressure on them.

I believe that, as much as anything else, is why players want to play there. At an elite level, the best players want to win games and win premierships.

Geelong (and Sydney) are two clubs that perpetually put themselves into a position to achieve that. At least in the last 20 years. Which is all the current players really know about. They didn't grow up seeing Geelong as cellar dwellars, not winning a flag in 50 odd years. They grew up seeing them always play finals and winning a few as well.

And yes, some may prefer the quieter lifestyle Geelong offers. Some may be from there originally. No doubt that's a draw for some players. Just like the limelight of Collingwood is a draw for others.

I would expect very few players in the league are just in it for the million dollar payday. The ones that are probably don't last long because they're playing for the wrong reasons. They get paid so well anyway that it doesn't really matter. Any half decent player can set themselves up for life on an AFL salary if they're smart about it. Not to mention the profile they build along the way that can help them post AFL career. That's not exclusive to Collingwood. There's not that many ex Collingwood players in the media. I can think of more Geelong players, actually.

Having said all that... Collingwood is clearly a destination club as well. Just for different reasons. And the proof is in the pudding. In the clubs history, we've usually played finals. Our biggest problem has been losing them. Not that we can't get ourselves into position to win them. i.e make the grand final.

For all the people who moan about our recruiting, etc. We've still played in 5 grand finals in the last 20 years. Won 2 of them. And other finals finishes along the way. We couldn't do that without attracting and retaining good players.
