Subject: Selection was an expression of the conservatism and risk averse nature of Buckley the coach
In reply to: Annabelle 's message, "Also agree and remember that Darling fluffed a sitter mark and they missed" on 19:12 29/10/24 Tue

Both Ben Reid and Darcy Moore were available for selection but had fitness question marks over them.

Buckley played it safe by selecting the undersized and overmatched Goldsack to play on Kennedy instead of rolling the dice on either Moore or Reid who were far better physically equipped to match up on the Weagles forward.

No names, no pack drill but about 4 years ago had a beer or three at a pub one night with a prominent football journalist. He has a strong Collingwood leaning and got rather agitated in discussing the non selection of Darcy Moore in that Grand Final.

If I can paraphrase
"WTF do you reckon Clarko would have done in the same situation? I tell you what I'm convinced that he would have played Moore. Unlike Buckley he would have been thinking about the upside rather than the downside of him breaking down. Just like him playing Cyril after 1/2 of VFL football in 10 weeks. And that's one of the differences between the two as AFL coaches"

Can't say that I disagree with his take on things!
