Subject: The thought that strikes one has to be this ….if a mature athlete like Zack
In reply to: Optimax 's message, "Happens quite a lot" on 15:55 02/11/24 Sat

Who has traversed the world to pursue a single sporting ambition , settles in at a club , gets 100 games into his career and a new coach comes in and undermines his self belief to the point that the senior coach is unapproachable .

We’ve all seen Touhey . His courage was unquestionable . His endeavour was invariably there each week and this is a sport that he didn’t grow up in .
Zack was sufficiently mature and independent to opt out of a club that he previously had enjoyed . He slotted in at Kardinia park seamlessly .
Carlton’s loss

Is it absurd to ask about the dramatic backward slide of some Magpie listed players ?

Approach the issue from a reverse view point
Who dropped off surprisingly this season and which coach had significant direct input .( and I don’t know the answers here )

Let me offer players at opposite ends of the Ground
Two seasons back and beyond IQ was not just a solid and reliable defender , he was fearless , tackled strongly and took game saving pack marks . His weaknesses were lofted and easily spoiled kicking plus uncertainty at times below the knees. The positives vastly outweighed the reverse.
2024 saw a drop off .In brief he lost self belief

Sgt Shultz ….at Freo he was a strong determined small but very strong forward who was reliable near goals .With us in his first year he was effective yet appeared quite un confident in a range of ways . This was surprising for a mid career player .

The other area is the “modest “ evolution of younger players ( apart from Ginni and Nick )
….fwiw Josh Fraser always seemed to put a positive spin on efforts each week but coaching any team without a ruckman , solid tall defenders or a genuine target forward wouldn’t be simple .

Another example — One looks at Ash Johnson and asks how a player of mid career stage with such a mix of abilities ( great leap, wonderful hands , good mobility and a strong generally accurate kick ) can appear so indifferent when there was a gap right there , begging to be filled

The best recent news in terms of possible additions to coaching / admin staff is club discussions with Rob Murphy . Outstanding bloke
