... I recall going to training in 1999 - 2000 when Malthouse took over, and could hear him talking about "taking initiative" -- about going when the the opportunity presented itself.

Look at MaCaffer's running goal from the wing in the 2009 final against Adelaide. He and Blair were no world-beaters, but under Buckley you took away what little spark they could have.

Also, both Malthouse and McRae are great man-managers, knowing how to get the best out of each player.

Leigh Matthews talked about how when he was at Brisbane, he and the sports psychologist broke the playing group into four different categories. I can't remember them exactly, but it was something like the sort of player who could manage themselves, those who needed the most time as possible to prepare, those who needed as little time as possible (tell them too early about a match-up, and they'd stress the whole week and it would impact their performance) ... and I can't remember the last one.

But Buckley treated everybody the same.

Similarly, I recall him saying it wasn't his job to motivate players -- that at this level they should motivate themselves. I understand his logic, but life gets in the way of everybody sometimes, so it's the coach's job to recenter players who might be distracted by personal issues or whatever.
