Subject: Perhaps people like Pyeman and myself are thankful to Hine for some valid reasons
In reply to: Pyeman WPBD 's message, "Feel the same, 20+ years and been a loyal servant of the club, undeserving of the slings and arrows" on 12:54 06/12/24 Fri

Not sure about the situation with Pyeman, but for myself, I have seen time through the "dark decades" during the 70's and 80's when we fell short on several occasions.

We saw the "great enlightening" in 1990 which, at the time, promised some semblence of being able to sustain success on the back of that team, only to experience unfathomable tragedy a year later and the gradual fall into the abyss that commenced a couple of years after that.

When we hit rock bottom in 1999, no one suspected that we wouldn't be bottom-feeders for several years after that, although we did have a tilt (with a "foreign legion" of experienced players of sorts) in 2002 before hitting the draft again for some young talent.

Where I stand today, if I think back to the closing years of the late 80's, I never thought I'd see:
- a period of 3 decades where we would win 3 times as many Flags as Carlton would
- a single player (let alone two) who would win multiple Flags with Collingwood
- another period of "bottoming out" where we won a Flag less than 3 seasons later despite an almost unanimous realisation by virtually all Pies supporters that we were due for a minimum of 5 years in the "wilderness" before even challenging again.

For those of us old enough to remember the heartbreaking period across the 70's and 80s (and I'm sure for those who also lived through this in the 60's as well) the "Hine Period" whilst far from perfect, is certainly far from deplorable.

In a time when new AFL entries have compromised the whole draft landscape, in a time when perennially poor teams have been afforded "priorities" on the back of mediocrity, I cannot find myself being too critical of a single person (among a collective or people) for drafting/trading decisions that may not always have gone our way.

As a survivor of the "always a bridesmaid" period in our history, I am absolutely chuffed to have been fortunate enough to witness 3 Flags in my lifetime.

Perhaps I just have very low standards...I don't know.
