Actually, we just got back from seeing King Kong again. The surprise hit of the summer. Lol. Yeah, Papa M opened for King Kong at Spaceland last night, and tonight King Kong played at a club close to my house here in San Diego. So we went and boogied down. Those guys were great... although I'm not really sure how to tell you about it. Three dudes. The dudes playing drums and bass were grrrreeeat! The dude playing keyboards and guitar did these vocals. No singing involved, just sort of narration. Anyhow the show related this story of this dude who leaves his home planet to become King of planet Kong. No joke. And it grooved. Gah. That's about all I can say. Highly recommended if you don't have a short attention span or are good with nonstandard music.

Anyhow. Papa M last night, as I mentioned earlier was a really short set. Less than an hour. It was David on guitar and harmonica, Paz on acoustic bass guitar, Paz's sister Anna on cello, and two other women on viola (I think) and violin. Paz did backup vocals. Mostly everyone in the club was there to see Papa M, so there was alot of noise when they came on stage. Gaddrow was busy taping, so I had to do camara duty up in the front row. I'll try to get any good photos posted. I talked to a few of the Papa M fans up there with camaras also, and they were really cool. For those of you who have bought his CDs, he only played one song from "Whatever, Mortal", called "Many Splendored Thing". There were one or two songs when I could see other people singing along to them, so I really don't know if the bulk of the songs were new or old or what. Anyhow the set itself I would call folk music. The feel was delicate, almost precious. Understatement was the rule, rather than overstatement. But the string accompaniment added a richer quality than even the album has, and the feminine backup vocals that Paz provided were really suiting. The mood was really nice and mellow. I think I've seen posts where people have said that David looks like he doesn't like being onstage... I didn't get that vibe at all... it was clear to me that he was enjoying himself. He and Paz were around before and after the set. There were a few Zwan people there, and I know it was tough for them to refrain from asking about Zwan, but those who talked to them said Paz and David were friendly folks.

Hopefully Candy won't get pissed at me for doing this.. Oh well..thanks Candy!! and thank you marlo!
