Subject: The 'Proud' History Of manly - Part VI

In 1979, manly buy a young second-rower from Brisbane Wests (he won't be the last purchase from a 'Wests' Club either... but more on that later). manly Coach, Frank Stanton, labels him a cheeky little red-headed bastard - Fred Jones labels him 'Fatty'.

Just managing 11 wins from 22 games that year, manly fail to make the Semis and depart on a well earned end of season trip to Hawaii... which gives one pause to wonder where they might've gone if they'd had a successful season.

(Wills attends his second GF in 1979 which is contested by Canterbury and St.George. In the first half, Tony Trudgett provides a 'questionable' (ie. forward) ball to Graeme Wynn near Canterbury's line. Wynn passes to Fullback Johnstone who scores with the 'try' converted.

An overawed Canterbury go to the sheds at half-time 17-2 down but return rejuvenated. The score at fulltime is St.George by a four-point margin, 17-13, over Canterbury. The Referee was Greg Hartley).
