(*) Truth be told, Kosses didn’t know what kind of leader she was. She had never intended to be a leader to begin with. She wasn’t a pup raised and destined for greatness. In fact, she couldn’t recount many of her younger years. What she could account to was the journey that had led her to this very river bank today. The sun streamed trough holes in the leaves above, leaving beams of light through the forest floor. As kosses past each one, so did the memorized of her past drifted through her mind (*)

(*) It had started innocently enough. Kosses, young and naive, had been traveling through the lands of CM without intent to stay. But she stumbled upon an odd gathering in the woods late one night. Wolves by the dozen had gathered together, howling and baying at a series of lights that rocketed off trees. Curious but cautious, Kosses had remained out of sight. Her silver ears astute as she caught each sound that channeled into them. There were pups too-- 30 or 40 of them cowering in a circle, shaking, and crying. Kosses’ maternal instinct, though not fully developed, was on high alert. Everything in her bones told her this situation didn’t look right. And then, in a blinding light something happened to the pups. From her view, it was hard to determine exactly what had happened. The pups hollered and screeched. And when it was all over, they all lay dead at the feet of their killers. There was chanting and howling from the wolf pack. …something about Black Magic… Kosses cowered in fear, her body flattening to the ground as she plotted her own escape. If she was caught, an outsider in the midst of this bloodshed, what could become her? (*)

(*)Panic gripped her throat, her mouth shut and her auds perked up slightly. Her eyes widened, her paws backtracking in the wooden cover. Panic was gripping her lungs, seizing her thoughts. She only wanted to run, to flee, to escape these horrible lands and these murderous fools. (*)

(*) But as she moved to flee, a new sound caught her trembling frame. She halted abruptly. Something was behind her. Something was approaching. Something was about to tread all over her earth toned tail. She bolted forward into the clearing without thinking. The eyes of the Black Magic wolves freezing her in her tracks. With one big gulp, she struggled to explain herself. But the eyes simply drifted off her and back to the pups. As Kosses stood in complete quivering fear, the pups began to whimper. Her ears perked and her body moved forward involuntarily. They were moving again, this small paws shifting their weight to stand with fat bellies brushing the either. They looked different now. The wolves continued with their applause, baying with glee at the transformation of innocent pups into their new clan. Kosses began to put the pieces together. These wolves, called the Black Magic Wolves, had stolen these pups from their competing pack. They were pure pups, being turned into evil slaves. The inhumanity of the situation struck gold in Kosses heart. Something about this was wrong, she felt it. The apparent leader of the group was auction off the pups 2 or 3 at a time. Without thinking, Kosses moved to the alpha of the pack. She moved low across the ground, ears up but eyes squinted and as beady as she could make them. “I want 30.” She commanded, her voice booming off trees. Everything around her fell silent. Kosses began to doubt her idea…began to feel panic gripping into her stomach again. She’d acted without thought, hadn’t balanced the pros and cons or even remotely considered the consequences. Oh shit. Oh shit. Her brain was doing circles as the alpha’s eyes penetrated her soul. (*)

(*) A splash in the stream announced Moina’s arrival to their side of the bank. Her eyes, having briefly gazed over, flashed back to the reality of the situation. She spoke softly, her mind else where. “This way, friends.” And she continued her trek towards the castle’s crumbling towers in the distance. (*)

(*) Kosses could never fully remember the conversation in the woods that night. All she knew was she was the mother of 30 pups, barely old enough to eat solid food. She’d ventured pack and forth through the woods all night, finding a large hollow under a massive fallen tree to seek refuge for the night. Sometimes a few pups would trail behind her, stopping every once in awhile when they grew tired. Her mouth was dry by the end of it but she’d stayed with the pups instead of venturing out for water. They slept close together, their coat a rainbow of color in the dim lighting. And kosses had never been more scared. She was worried that in the night those wolves would come back looking for these smuggled away pups. Wondering why an innocent female had rescued them. Her eyes never closed through those muddled hours of night and day. She never rested, but kept watchful eyes on those pups only a few years younger than her own frame. (*)

(*) It wasn’t until a few days later that those wolves had come for the 30 brown, black, white, and gray pups. They challenged, tried to steal, and tried everything they could to get them back from Kosses. Each attempt was met with resilience the female didn’t know she had. Each sneak attempt was blocked by vicious fangs, each challenge fought until the other slinked away in blood, and each argument met with bared teeth and flattened ears. They were not getting them back. They never would. It was this memory that made her smile as they walked through grass and brush (*)
