Subject: July '02 DC/Balto Area Dog Events

Not much happening in July that's strictly dog related. However, many of the local parks have concert series that you can take your dog to and both of you can enjoy the music and a picnic. Lake Accotink, VA and Quiet Waters Park, MD are just two of the sites that welcome (or at least tolerate) your canine friend; check out your nearby parks.

Sat 6/29 9am-?, BOYDS, MD: Animal Planet Stampede,(registration starts at 730am) 5K fun run/walk http://apl.discovery.com/aprescue/expo/stampede.html

Sat 6/29 11am-10pm, HANOVER, PA: Codorus State Park Summer Blast- The CNC Newfs are having a water rescue demo at this although near squat is on the website http://www.cncnewfs.com/Calendar.htm. At any rate, this is a summer celebration w/bands, fireworks and stuff. More at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/calendar/park.asp?Year=2002&Park=6316&M=all, scroll down.

Sun 6/30 10am-12n, ANNAPOLIS, MD: Pets on Wheels will be at Quiet Waters Park giving out magnets, brochures and info about their program. powleaaco@yahoo.com or 410-222-0738

Sun 6/30 10am-?,ANNAPOLIS, MD: Dave's Magical Mystery Hike. Looking for a little adventure in your life? Come join Dave for one of his famous mystery hikes. Meet at Grauls (Rowe Blvd and Taylor Ave) at 10 am to find out where the hike is. For more info, contact dave@onaclearbay.com. Sponsored by CHAOS (Chesapeake Hiking and Outdoor Society) http://jenzakayaker.tripod.com/CHAOS/id3.html , a group that supports hiking with your dog, off-leash when feasible.

Th 7/4 930am-12noon, BALTIMORE, MD: The Big KaaBOOM! Visionary Pets on Parade • Dress your pet and strut your stuff. Registration at 9:30am. Animal fun! Animal prizes for Best Costume, Most Patriotic, Visionary Pet Tricks, and more! Visionary Pets Award Ceremony. Visionary Trophies! Free. Lots of water thoughtfully provided. Hosted by the American Visionary Arts Museum (AVAM) http://avam.org/cgi-bin/Events.cgi, this place is Weird Central of Baltimore. You'll see things here (ie grass growing on a pink car) you'll never see anywhere else. Bouffant hairdos, feather boas and rhinestone encrusted stretch pants will abound and the female contingent will be even more colorful. A multitude of events go on all day and if you can last that long, it's a fine place to view the fireworks at the Inner Harbor.

Th 7/4 12noon, TAKOMA PARK, MD: The Partnership for Animal Welfare http://www.paw-rescue.org/shows.html#event has a contingent marching in the 4th of July parade-I'm sure they'd be pleased to have you help swell their ranks.

Th 7/4-Sun 7/7, 7am-6pm, WEST FRIENDSHIP, MD: Howard County Fairgrounds is the site for the Independence Cluster, four AKC all breed and obedience dog shows on one site starting Th through Sun, many vendors. Huge. http://www.infodog.com/panels/md.htm. Be aware that water is hard to find at these things for some reason. Bring your own, or a collapsible bowl and fill up in the restrooms.

Sat 7/6 10am-12n, ELLICOTT CITY, MD: Woof in the Woods-the HoCo dog group has been having these walks at Centennial Park http://www.digitalcity.com/baltimore/entertainment/venuemap.adp?vid=40627 on the first Sat of the month. Don't know for sure if they're having this one, but if you're nearby and looking for something to do, give it a shot. It's a nice park with a lake you can sneak your dog into for a swim as long as you don't mind a little muck. Your dog won't.

Sat 7/13, ?-?, HOWARD CO, MD: Opening day for Howard Co's first official (and pricey and exclusive) dog park. Here is all I've found, but if you're interested I guess you can call. "Worthington Park is being developed off New Cut Road near its intersection with Hillsborough Road, just north of Route 103. The off-leash area will be
the first part of the park to be ready; the grand opening will be held on Saturday, July 13th. An annual user permit ($30 per household) is necessary to use the park; the money will be used for the upkeep of the dog area. To register for a permit, you will need to present a copy of your county dog license and a current rabies certificate, and each dog registered will be issued a distinctive tag. Registration can be done by mail (call 410-313-7275 for the registration form) or in person at the Department of Recreation & Parks, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia 21046; if you will be attending the July 13th opening, you should be able to register at the park that day."

The above was culled from the HoCo Dog Yahoo Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dogpark/messages/
