I think most students figure that they are already supporting the athletics program enough by paying all the lock-in fees that have been voted in over the years, by showing up at games once in a while, and maybe by paying their outrageous prices for food at the concession stands.

Now I actually did formally donate to athletics when I was still a student, and have continued to do so since leaving. But you're right, it's very rare. I was the only student I knew who did that. Since most college students are borderline broke all the time anyway, it's a question of priorities. If you asked the average UCSB student whether he'd rather give $100 to the men's basketball program or spend it all on beer or a visit from College Cuties, the sports team would lose every time. I didn't smoke anything and never drank, so I had the money to spare, but I knew some guys who were spending at least $200-300 a week on drugs and alcohol. If that money went to the athletic department instead, they could double or triple their budget!
