...trying to understand at least highlights of her inquiry. It had been a long time since he had experienced language in any form, but "okay?" was universal and familiar in word if not reality. "Okay" was something he had not been for a very long time. Ironically, the very sequence of events which concluded his prior existence was set in motion by a decision which he thought would improve it. For a time, it did; for a time, his ennui was a thing of the past. But the things he did, the price he paid, was ultimately more than he could bear. And when ultimately he refused to pay the devil, the devil collected his only collateral.

Absently, he rubbed his right forearm, still ensconced in a billowy glove of emotional security. The half of him that was cloud darkened now, even as the half that was man shook under Aori's caress, turning away. These were harsh, painful memories, incomplete though they were. What had he paid for? To whom had his debt ultimately been paid? Who had he been and, more importantly, where was he now? Hazel, bloodshot eyes met Aori's as the last question, seemingly the most immediate, rumbled to the surface.

"Is this....is this heaven?"

"Everything has been figured out except how to live."
-Jean-Paul Sartre, (1905-1980)
