A BELFAST community group involved in the beleaguered Springvale educational village hit out today as the University of Ulster confirmed it is pulling out of current plans.

But the West Belfast Partnership Board vowed it is determined to forge ahead and help find viable, alternative plans for the peaceline university campus.

Geraldine McAteer, who is on the Springvale Board, said the group was "incensed, angry and disappointed" over the stance taken by the University at a Board meeting on Wednesday.

The UU confirmed yesterday that it is "withdrawing from current structures" but refuted accusations that it had pulled back support for the multi-million pound project.

Educational partner in the interface venture, the Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education (BIFHE), also announced "disappointment" that original plans for the village are now not possible.

The university campus, in development for over 10 years, was to be run as a joint partnership between BIFHE, UU and the North, West and Shankill Partnership Boards.

But they are now involved in a review of the situation after the Department of Employment and Learning revealed last month that Springvale had run into financial difficulties.

It was at the first Board meeting since this blow was announced that community groups first became aware of the UU's position on the issue.

"We are incensed, angry and disappointed over the stance taken by the University of Ulster and the fact that the project as it is conceived now does not look as if it is going ahead," said Ms McAteer.

"However, our view is that we are very interested in moving forward with something at Springvale.

"The campus project was sold to us our part of the peace dividend. The Mackies Development is dependent on the campus going ahead. It has been the main plank of the West Belfast/Shankill jobs task force and it was hoped it would act as a catalyst for social and economic regeneration in this area."

But she vowed that the West Belfast Partnership Board will be moving the project forward.

"We are very interested in being part of the review and exploring new models for what might happen at Springvale.

"We are looking forward positively to working with other potential partners - particularly BIFHE.
