The Taoiseach of the Republic of Ireland, Mr Bertie Ahern TD, will give a lecture on the role of the European Union as a force for peace at the University of Ulster’s Magee campus next week.

Mr Ahern will be speaking in his capacity as President of the European Council, a post he holds until June 2004.

His address forms part of a series of lectures on peacekeeping, at the invitation of the Tip O’Neill Chair, Professor John Hume.

The Tip O’ Neill Chair, funded by the Ireland Funds, commemorates the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, who was well known for his support of the peace process in Northern Ireland.

Professor Hume has held the Chair since 2002 and previous speakers have included President Bill Clinton and former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard.
