UU Students' safety comes last to the sdlp's exploitation of theClery Family's grief

I could hardly believe what I was reading last week in the Irish news when the SDLP's Patricia Lewsley of all people should be the person to smear the Clery Act, the Clery family and their daughter, Jeanne all for one cheap and sad swipe at Sinn f�in's, Michelle Gildernew.

Students safety on campus would not need legislation to enforce disclosure of attacks and crimes against students or any one else on campus if certain people within the higher echeleons did their jobs with a conscience. These people are more inclined to protect the image of the university at all costs overthe individual welfare of any student.

UU Students have been raped, drug raped, attacked, beaten and robbed on and near campus. Who hides these crimes??? Where are these statistics??? Who has access to them?????

The Public relations team do for a start and the police might do also. But , Who is responsible for security on campus - the security officers are - do they disclose to all employees, parents and students about car theft, phone theft, burlaries, rape, assualts, sexual assaults and most pertinent of all - Drug spiking on campus?? No they don't. Do you think these people have a duty of care to everone at University to disclose these facts??????

Is paramilitary evictions, threats or beatings of students reported, logged and reported to perspective students seeking accommmodation in areas close to campus where such attacks have occurred??? No it isn't. Should it be????

Is there a map displayed in a number of visible locations on campus that pin points where all crimes occur??? No there isn't.

Who pays for the services at University???? You the student or your parents do or both. Now ask yourself this - do you have the right to know about crime on and near campus - yes or no?

The Clery family didn't know all this above and when their daughter was awakened out of her sleep, raped, sodomised, strangled and then had her throat slashed with glass before being murdered by another student who had broke into her third floor dorm at Lehigh University Pennsylvania. Mr amd Mrs Clery like any good parents wanted to know how and why their only daughter died. The University's conclusion was that jeanne's murder was an "abberation". When you read more you will plainly see what a low and disgusting political exploitation has been employed by the SDLP. Please Don't let this political party use students safety in this dispecible manner but most importantly do not let this political party let those with a duty to care describe your (yes it could be you) injuries, rape, loss of your car or life as an abberation.

The SDLP should know better and leave the Clery family out of their electioneering stunts.

Don't let the SDLP cloud the students' safety issue by election swipes and spins against their opponents who are concerned about Students' safety.
