Perverted Rapist Waves At Victim

A CONVICTED rapist who subjected his "targeted" victim to an "appalling catalogue of violence and sexual abuse" was jailed for 10 years yesterday.

As he was led into the dock of Belfast Crown Court - sitting in Dungannon - 22-year-old Craig Albert James Joseph Morgan waved and smiled at his former student victim.

At the end of his trial last month, Morgan, from Malton Rise in the Taughmonagh estate in Belfast, was convicted of rape and falsely imprisoning his victim after a rave in the King's Hall in April last year.

During the trial, the court heard that Morgan had stayed behind after his fiancee had left and that he had accosted his victim as she relieved herself behind a hedge before marching her down the course of Balmoral Golf course and raping her.

The jury heard that the young woman was raped a short distance from a gap in the golf club's perimeter fence that leads to the estate where Morgan lived.

Judge McFarland said Morgan had "never given a credible excuse" why he had stayed on at the rave, adding that the attack "was not a spur of the moment idea - she was targeted by you as a potential victim".

"She managed to escape, albeit for a short time, before she was forced to the ground. She was subjected to an ordeal lasting perhaps 30 minutes, culminating in a violent rape and she was the victim of other sexual perversions," the judge said yesterday.

He revealed that after the callous rape, Morgan's victim dropped out of her university degree studies and is "extremely unlikely to return", adding that there was a "real prospect that her life would not reach its full potential".

Judge McFarland told Morgan, who had previous convictions for inflicting grievous bodily harm and possession of a weapon, that he had shown "absolutely no remorse" for the attack and "no mitigating features".

As well as the 10-year jail term, the judge ordered that he be released "on licence" as he considered the Secretary of State better able to "consider the appropriate restrictions" to be placed upon him.

Judge McFarland also told Morgan that, as he had been convicted of rape, he would be subject to the police sex offenders' register "for your entire life".

As he was led from the dock to the cells, wearing a tracksuit and Glasgow Rangers shirt, Morgan again waved at his victim.

Outside the court, the victim's mother said they were "happy" at the sentence but added that "he could have been jailed for life as far as I'm concerned".

One of the officers in charge of the case, Det Const White said he was "delighted" with the outcome.

He said: "That man is clearly a danger and, certainly, women in this Province will be a lot safer after this incarceration.

"He now has plenty of time to reflect on his actions."
