A man has been jailed for 10 years for raping a student after a rave in Belfast last year.

Craig Morgan, 22, from Malton Rise in Taughmonagh was also sentenced to three years for falsely imprisoning the 19-year-old woman after the event at the Kings Hall.

A judge told Morgan on Tuesday, he had subjected the woman to an "appalling ordeal culminating in a violent rape".

He said it was not a spur of the moment decision, but had targeted her as a potential victim when he saw her outside the event.

Morgan's trial in April heard that the student had left the rave early to find her friends on on 22 April last year.

Morgan accosted her and marched her down Balmoral golf course.

The student said that initially she managed to fend him off by hitting him with her handbag and running.

However, he caught up with her and forced her to the ground before raping her.

The woman told the jury she had pleaded with Morgan, offering him her phone number and telling him he was a "good looking fella...you don't need to do this".

The court also heard from a security guard who said that when he went to collect his car at the end of the event, he could hear a woman screaming "no, no" from the direction of the golf course but could find nothing when he went to investigate.

When Morgan's victim walked the course with investigating officers, they found her missing watch and earring as well as a hair brush, thought to have fallen from her bag when she hit her attacker with it.

Giving evidence on his own behalf, Morgan claimed the student willingly agreed to have sex with him.

Morgan, who has a previous conviction for inflicting grievous bodily harm, actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon, was ordered to sign the police sex offenders register.
