Blame Dumped On Students

RESIDENTS of a south Belfast community say the area's reputation is being tarnished by careless landlords and the reckless behaviour of students.

Householders in Collenso Parade, Stranmillis, have described their back entries as "disgusting" and some claim to have photographed rats rooting around in overflowing bins and dumped binbags of rubbish.

"The streets are so dirty, I am ashamed," said one woman.

"There are so many student houses now and they just throw out their rubbish and leave it lying. It's never collected and it just mounts up... the smell at times is just unbearable.

"We ring the council and they come and take it away, but surely its the landlords who should be held responsible for this."

The woman said she had even seen people dumping old mattresses.

"We pay high rates to live here and yet we have to put up with the smell, young people's drunken behaviour, the noise - it's disgusting," she added.

Belfast City Council have revealed that 20 fixed penalty notices for illegal dumping have been served in the Stranmillis area in the last week.

A spokesman added: "The council will clear entries of illegally dumped material, where requested to do so by residents.

"However, it should be stressed that the dumping of any materials in entries is illegal, and the council will take all appropriate steps to ensure successful enforcement, as it has been doing across the city."

Brian Hannon, private sector manager of student housing at Queen's University, said he regularly attended meetings with residents to discuss any problems in the area.

"We actively work with the residents' association and there is a 24-hour telephone helpline for residents to report disturbances," said Mr Hannon.
