Students In 'Sectarian' Gang Attack
Tuesday 6th July 2004 http://www.derryjournal.com/story/3933

Police are investigating an incident in which a group of students came under an alleged sectarian attack from a mob armed with sticks in the Carlisle Road area of Derry.

The incident happened shortly before 2 a.m. when around seven students were walking from Market Street to a house on Carlisle Road.

One of the victims of the gang attack, who had to receive a number of staples to the head injuries he sustained in the assault.

"There was a group standing at the top of Artillery Street shouting down at us gone you fenian bastards. There were only a few at the start but there were soon around 15-20 of them and they weren't that young, they were aged between 18 and 30 - there were full grown man among them," said the Derry student.

The victim explained that one of the men had a walkie talkie or CB radio and was communicating with another party about the attack.

"One of them, a man in his 20's, had a walkie talkie or CB radio saying send more men down here now and lets get the fenian bastards.

"We later thought that this gang was some kind of protection for the Fountain in light of recent attacks on the area, but these fellas were drunk and obviously just decided to start on the first people they suspected of being nationalists," he said.

However, not all of the group got involved in the attack.

"We were saying we just want to get back to the house, but they wouldn't listen and they shouted 'lets get them' and started hitting us with sticks - well they were actually bits of skirting board. Not all of the gang attacked us, some stood back," he added.

"I was hit very hard on the top of the head and fell to the ground. We tried to defend ourselves and managed to take some of the sticks off them. Then, just in time, the police arrived and the attackers ran off towards the Fountain," he said.

Police confirmed yesterday that they are investigating the attack. A spokesman also confirmed that, during the disturbance, debris (wooden pallets and other materials) was placed in the middle of the road at Fountain Street, which was later removed.
