I am surprised it makes THAT much of a difference. Are you under 26? No home owner? Any tickets?

I am still with Farmers, and upgraded to higher coverage over time. I don't remember what the difference was, but it sure wasn't as high as you report.

I found that many insurances with 100/300 type coverage STILL only cover $50k in property damage - something to look out for. If you total somebody's new Mercedes, or run into somebody's shop, you'll be over that...

I designed a website for a law office some time ago, and when I read through their case history, I realized that if you hurt somebody and possibly destroy this person's life, even one Million US$ of coverage is not a whole lot. I asked the attorneys, and they suggested looking into an Umbrella policy. Farmers quoted me an outrageous price, so I did not do it; State Farm seems more reasonnable for this kind of policy.

If you want to go cheap, you can always look into a discount insurance, such as AIG.
