Subject: Totalled my 928 (long-ass story)

Crap. Yep, I destroyed my beautiful car. I was driving back from the racetrack when I screwed up and ended up throwing it away. I'm OK but the car is gone. I got that '90 GT w/ only 24K miles less than three years ago. It had a paint-to-sample Panthero Metallic exterior and Linen interior w/ black piping. It was truly one of a kind.

Last Sunday I was at Buttonwillow, a racetrack near Bakersfield, California for an open track day. I managed to survive the whole day without incident, even while tempting fate by trying to go flat in 4th gear through the esses section of the track. Some folks who had done the same track day last year told me it was an >8 hour drive back to the Bay Area and that it was stop & go for 250 miles due to Thanksgiving weekend traffic. Being the bright guy I am, I thought, "Why waste 8 hours getting frustrated in traffic and killing my left knee w/ the clutch, when I can take Hwy 25 back? It may take as long, but at least I'll have fun." Hwy 25 runs between 101 and I-5 and was rated as Car & Driver's top ten roads in the US. One of things that makes it such a great road is that there is no traffic at all. Sure enough, I found 25 to be completely traffic free.

I was making great time, when I crested a hill to find the road made a 90 deg. turn to the left and uphill. I was going wayyyy too fast and ended up on the outside of the turn in the gravel. I slid off the road and into the hillside. The act of going off-road crunched the right front suspension. The act of hitting the hillside, put the car on its side, driver's door down. You really haven't lived until you've exited your car by rolling down the passenger side window and planting your hands on the roof and door to push yourself out.

A lot of nice people stopped within minutes to help me. There wasn't any cell phone coverage in the area, so people had to drive a few miles to less hilly areas. One extremely generous and sympathetic couple stayed w/ me for an hour until fire rescue came. They offered me food, water and shelter inside their SUV, but I was too generally pissed at myself to take them up on their hospitality.

FYI, there are no rental car agencies in King City, California. Also, the Greyhound bus does NOT make its scheduled stop at King City at 7:00 AM. If you go to the Conchitas Mini-Mart on 1st St. at 6:45 on a cold November morning, be prepared to wait another 3.5 hours outside until the delayed 10 AM northbound bus arrives. Also the scheduled southbound 8:20 AM bus does not stop in King City. You have been warned.

So the car is being totalled. Anybody have any advice on what to do when dealing with the insurance company? Has anyone ever bought their salvage titled car back? Any and all advice would be appreciated.

-Dennis
