Subject: talent pool hasn't thinned...
In reply to: Ian Kahn 's message, "Re: will baseball contract, and should it?" on 16:32:03 12/09/01 Sun

The talent pool hasn't thinned at all. It's a matter of talent evaluation and emphases placed by said evaluators. The Astros have drafted more pitchers 6'2" and smaller over the past 5-7 years than any other team in baseball. Height cannot be taught; pitching can. Wade Miller, Tim Redding, Roy Oswalt, Carlos Hernandez, and Billy Wagner all fit that profile. If you have a live arm, though you may not have the same plane to pitch on as a 6'6" Andy Benes, a Roy Oswalt can be far more successful. Another practice being debunked is drafting athletes over ballplayers. Sure Oakland may not have the flashiest defensive players (who are typically the better athletes), they have guys who learned the strike zone early on and continue to draw walks. Meanwhile, you have the former GM of the Pirates Cam Bonifay trading Jon Lieber for Brant Brown and paying Derek Bell 5 million this year to .173 and drive in 13 runs. The talent is there....it just isn't in the front office of every team.
