In terms of energy used during a game, a heavier boat is always going to take more energy to get up to the same speed due to higher inertia. But for people that are short for their weight like Jason it perhaps doesn't matter so much.

But a light boat pays off more in energy used to maneouvre the boat. In terms of torque required more effort is required to pivot a heavier boat (particularly stern and bow), than pivoting a light boat. And turn after turn wears a person down even during the course of a game, being able to throw a light boat round quickly and with ease is a definite asset.

Put very simply, with your arm out straight, lifting a 1 kg weight is harder than a 0.5 kg weight, it is the same with pivoting a boat.
