I probably think my boat is heavier than it really is, but I'm always disappointed when I don't have some amazingly different experience in a lighter boat. I think the Vampire S is a nice design, so I try to throw it around as much as I can get away with...
I weigh 65kg or less, usually less, and I find that boat agility and length makes the biggest difference to me- eg, the practicality of the design. I've seen people paddle an old stingray against the latest boats- they don't accelerate past them, but it all depends on the paddler. I paddled my powerplay better than my vampire s, until I made the decision to apply some efffort to my technique in the S.
Generally, I think technique is the easiest way to exert control over my performance. I figure that once my shoulders are fixed and I'm controlling my kayak better, I should perform. A nice new light boat sure could give a psychological boost, but I'm not all that certain that boat weight matters as much as body weight- or should I say, body composition.
After all, you're not lugging 12kg thru the water, you're propelling 12kg+your body weight, using a certain percentage of muscle fibres, and that weight is supported by water which also acts against the boat. You might be expending energy by using incorrect technique, or by not anticipating the game and strategies as well as you should. There, that might confuse the issue....
