Imagine summer nights that sound like money
jangling in a mason jar; honey, this one is hot
as a sweltering bee. You know I'm heading for something
mighty warm, the arms of a stubble chin darling
who wants to take me away in my naked skin.

There's a rich moon tonight, like a large and luminous eye,
the way it stares through mossy hair. Loan me light
running down to the river, where skeeters sip the wine of corpses,
old fools flay in water and sweethearts struggle
deeper into the shadows of trees.

There is not a treasure to find or a bribe to be had
that would return what we stand to lose, when
the jar runs empty and there are no more nights to be had.
So shake it up, make it sing, pretend so much wealth
we can't possibly spend all the plenty of summer nights.
